A vegetarian only hotel platform has increased its number of offerings to over 500 hotels, spas, conference centres and B&Bs.
VeggieHotels, a Germany-based vegetarian and vegan hotel portal lists properties located in more than 60 countries. Over 60 accommodation offerings serve vegan only food and absolutely none of the hotels listed by VeggieHotels serve meat or fish.
Last year, VeggieHotels was awarded the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) 2014 Progress Award for the “Most Animal Friendly Hotel Platform”.
Hotels and resorts generally place at best, token vegetarian dishes on the menu, with the more animal-product-restrictive vegan dishes, being even harder to find.
Vegetarians leave meat and fish from the plates, but often include dairy and eggs in their diet. Vegans on the other hand, leave all meat, dairy and eggs from their meals, choosing instead, vegetables, fruit, legumes, beans, nuts and grains.
Vegans adopt their animal-free diet for various reasons including ethics, environmental sustainability and health. The growing popularity of the diet is forcing the hotel industry to look at more sustainable and ethical ingredients in their dishes.
In amongst the sites worldwide accommodation choices, 91vegetarian properties are offered in Asia, and 9 locations are included in Australasia.
VeggieHotels was launched in 2011, with the hotel site only listing accommodations that to do not serve meath and fish.
