TripAdvisor has announced it will partner with Ecotourism Australia to extend its GreenLeaders initiative into Australia, with the GreenLeaders Programme Down Under.
Launched in 2013 in the US and Canada, GreenLeaders caters to guests who want to select sustainable tourism. Earlier this year, the programme was also extended to Europe with GreenLeaders now covering more than 7,600 properties in 21 countries.
Australian accommodation operators will now be able to apply to join the GreenLeader programme. Properties will be categorised into four award categories, with the award displayed on the property’s TripAdvisor listing.
Under the arrangement Ecotourism Australia’s ECO certified accommodation providers will be automatically eligible for GreenLeader status. TripAdvisor’s criteria for the GreenLeaders programme has been acknowledged by Ecotourism Australia as an appropriate match for ECO certification, with current members already exceeding nearly all of the requirements to become a GreenLeader.
“The partnership between Ecotourism Australia and TripAdvisor is an exciting project where Australian tour operators with a commitment to quality are rewarded with exposure at a global level. We welcome the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders programme to Australia, and bringing the concept of eco-certification well and truly into the mainstream,” said Ecotourism Australia chief executive Rod Hillman.
Ecotourism Australian plan to add new criteria to its ECO certification process shortly to ensure ECO certified providers will be seamlessly included in the GreenLeaders Down Under programme.
Ecotourism Australia hopes that, once established, the GreenLeaders Programme will be expanded to incorporate tours and operator managed attractions.
