You’re sustainably-minded enough that you reuse your towels when possible whilst travelling, but where did those towels come from, and under what kind of conditions, were they made?
Sweat shops are commonly used in the manufacture of towels and other sewn products. Now, a US-based hospitality linen manufacturer has achieved Fair Trade certification, giving their hotel buyers and respective travellers confidence that the people involved in the production of the towel have benefited significantly.
Linen manufacturer Coyuchi were the first company to supply organic cotton bedding in the US. The company’s new towel collection has become the first-ever towel range to receive Fair Trade USA certification in North America.
The Fair Trade accolade ensures that workers who sew and produce the bathroom linen receive direct economic, environmental and social benefits for their services. Under the certification, each items sold redirects a percentage of the sale back into a special workers’ fund. The decision on how the funds are used lies with the workers. Proceeds are generally used according to the needs of the community in areas such as disaster relief, medical care or scholarships.
“Creating products with the highest standard of environmental and social commitment is the essence of our business,” CEO of Coyuchi, Eileen Mockus said.
“We are so proud that our classic Air Weight Towels have achieved this certification from Fair Trade USA, and look forward to working together in the future to create fair wage jobs for our partner farmers and workers both here and around the world.”
Fair Trade USA has welcomed the efforts by Coyuchi that will result in improving the lives of workers involved in manufacturing the towel range.
“We applaud Coyuchi’s work to show the industry that good business, beautiful products and sustainability go hand-in-hand,” said Maya Spaull, Director of Innovation at Fair Trade USA.
Coyuchi also received certification to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) in 2013. Coyuchi’s Air Weight Towels are part of the company’s permanent collection, and will be launched with the Fair Trade label in the first half of 2015.
Coyuchi’s new range of all-natural linen and organic items includes cotton sheet sets, throw blankets, quilts, duvet covers, loungewear and more. The responsibly-minded brand will also introduce Coyuchi Mattresses by Naturepedic, a series of fully customisable mattresses, handcrafted in a US Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified factory. The mattress range will use GOTS-certified cotton, Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS)-certified latex, and wool.
