Experience the luxury of a BMW i8 at the Shanghai Peninsula, recipient of a Travel + Leisure award

As guests of the Peninsula Shanghai are now able to experience driving a BMW i8 with the five-star hotel’s addition of the luxury hybrid plug-in electric vehicle (EV) to its fleet, it’s easy to guess why the Peninsula has been named Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best Hotel in Asia” by its readers.

The addition of the BMW i8 to the Peninsula Shanghai fleet follows on from the hotel’s installation of a BMW EV recharging station last year, and announcement that EV users including BMW i8 and BMW i3 drivers, can recharge their vehicles free of charge at the Bund-located property.

Shanghai has been proactive in encouraging the installation of private EV charging stations, and is in line with China’s ‘new energy vehicle’ (NEV) policies which offers EV purchasers tax exemptions and subsidies in an effort to reduce air pollution and achieve a target of adding five million EVs in China by 2020. In June 2015 alone, China automakers produced more than 25,000 EVs, four times more than the same month last year.

China’s pro-EV policy fits well with the Peninsula Shanghai’s sustainability approach with the company following the company’s sustainability blueprint “Sustainable Luxury Vision 2020” which sets out more than fifty economic, social and environmental goals that the Group aims to achieve by 2020.

The recent Travel + Leisure award which is awarded by a reader poll, judges properties on a range of categories including location, service, facilities, design and others. The win is testament that a luxury hotel can still make sustainable changes, without compromising on service, comfort or luxury.

On receiving news of the “World’s Best Hotel in Asia” award, Peninsula Shanghai Complex Managing Director, Jospeph Chong said, ”We are very proud to receive this prestigious award from a respected international publication such as Travel + Leisure. To be voted the Best Hotel in Asia is a considerable achievement for the entire team at The Peninsula Shanghai, especially as we have been open for less than six years. During that time, everyone has worked tirelessly to deliver award-winning standards of service and comfort for our guests, and to show that luxury hospitality in China can be truly world-class.”
