Marriott has achieved 1.5 million new soap bars through recycling hotel soaps

Marriott International has achieved a major sustainable milestone with the recycling of soap contributed by Marriott hotels to manufacture 1.5 million bars of soap for the ‘Global Hygiene Revolution’.

The Global Hygiene Revolution is part of the Clean the World initiative started in 2009 by Shawn Seipler and Paul Till in an effort to combat poor hygiene in impoverished communities around the globe, using discarded soap and shampoo products used by the hospitality industry in enormous volumes.

The soap recycling achievements are part of Marriott’s comprehensive sustainability initiatives to reduce water usage, consumption and waste as well as reduce its operational costs. Marriott has also implemented a portfolio of innovative conservation initiatives under its ‘Spirit to Preserve’ environmental strategy.

Overall, Marriott hotels have donated over 123,000 kilograms of soap to create new bars. The global hotel group has also contributed 79,000 kilograms of bottled bathroom products for us in ONE Project hygiene kits.

Marriott International collect soap and shampoo products at various properties throughout the world. After the soap is collected, sanitised and remanufactured as new bars of soap, the products are then distributed in developing countries and homeless shelters.

Estimates show that around 9,000 children will die from diseases such as diarrhea everyday worldwide. Around 62 per cent of these deaths could be prevented through basic hygiene.

It has been estimated that 9,000 children die every day in the world from respiratory diseases or diarrhea, and up to 62% of these deaths could be prevented by simple hand washing with soap. By providing bars of soap that would otherwise be discarded into land fill, Clean The World is saving the lives of children and adults around the world.

Other hotels are invited to join the program, with the Clean the World group offering hotels staff training, collection containers and certificates for advertising the program and hotel partnership to guests. Hotels joining the effort will have their brand advertised through the Clean the World website, encouraging more customers to use your hotel.
