Laos eco lodge, Kamu Lodge has announced it will add the most sustainable bar in Laos to the 20-tent eco resort later this year.
Located upstream from Luang Prabang, Kamu Lodge will launch its new thatched-roof bar in October. The intimate bar will offer space for only two or three patrons at a time to enjoy the offerings of the bar, whilst taking in the surrounding greenery and caramel-coloured water of the Mekong River.
The lodge’s solar powered safari tents will also receive an update with the installation of new floors.
Kamu Lodge is a private eco-lodge which began life in 2004 and is a pioneer of low-impact travel in Laos.
The lodge employs some 27 staff from a neighbouring Kamu community, one of Laos’ ethnic hill-tribe minorities. Guests of Kamu Lodge have the opportunity to explore a genuine Kamu village and participate in traditional daily activities, while local guides share their knowledge of Kamu culture.
For every visitor it receives, Kamu Lodge donates US$1 to a village development fund. The money is spent once a year on a project chosen by the villagers, provincial authorities and lodge management. Past projects have included the renovation of the village’s primary school and the purchase of cattle for farming and breeding purposes.
Kamu Lodge also sponsors free health care for all villagers of the neighbouring community and is in the process of building a fully equipped dispensary to improve the quality of medical services in the area.
