SpiceRoads is getting behind elephant welfare

Thai bicycle tour group SpiceRoads has teamed up with World Animal Protection (formerly WSPA) to support elephant welfare by signing the charity’s Elephant-friendly tourism pledge earlier this month.

SpiceRoads has become the first Thai tour operator to sign the pledge, which is supported by more than 100 travel companies worldwide.

Under the commitment, only elephant experiences from organisations offering a high standard to elephant welfare and conservation, will be offered by the niche bicycle tour group. Responsible elephant tourism, such as viewing elephants in the wild or semi-wild habitats, and encouraging their customers to participate in elephant-friendly tourism activities will be delivered under the commitment.

“As a specialised “niche” bicycle tour operator since 2000, SpiceRoads has been committed to responsible tourism, because we acknowledge that while tourism provides locals with income to improve their standard of living, it can also affect their culture and environment,” SpiceRoads Cycle Tours GM Daniel Moylan said. “Apart from that we are proud to say that we do not condone the use of animal captivity for profit, this includes Tiger petting zoos, Elephant shows and Elephant riding.”
