Aqua Expeditions have launched their luxury Mekong River cruises with a new ship, the Aqua Mekong, the first Mekong luxury floating boutique hotel, which will offer guests a Mekong experience with a focus on environmental sustainability.
Aqua Expeditions operate the highly successful Aqua Amazon and Aria Amazon cruise ships, offering guests an eco experience of the Amazon River. After exploring the Mekong River between Vietnam and Cambodia, the company’s founder and owner, Francesco Galli Zugaro identified the company could create the Aqua Mekong River cruise, unveiling a sophisticated yet sustainable luxury cruise for discerning travellers.
Guests of the Mekong River cruise will experience diverse cultures, religions and traditions that dwell along the Mekong. Guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history of the river’s ecosystem and incredible landmarks such as Angkor Wat, as well as relaxing on the Aqua Mekong cruise ship.
Mr Zugaro noted that, “the 20-cabin Aqua Mekong will allow our guests to experience, first-hand, the colourful and varied cultures, religions and timeless traditions that I have discovered along the Mekong. Traveling deep into its remote tributaries, our guests will be able to learn about the history and ecosystem of this important Southeast Asian waterway. And I love being able to offer our guests on both ends of the Aqua Mekong cruise unique trips to other Vietnam and Cambodia points of interest including the beautiful temples of Angkor Wat.”
The 20-room Aqua Mekong will have a one-to-one guest to staff ratio. The 62.4 metre cruise ship was designed by Saigon-based Noor Design and embodies the aesthetic of a sophisticated five star hotel. Local sustainable materials and artisanal touches of the Mekong’s multifaceted cultures round out these generous interior spaces that welcome guests in the utmost comforts between on and off shore excursions along this fascinating river. Spacious and indulgent, yet intimate enough to feel entirely exclusive, the Aqua Mekong incorporates elegantly relaxed lounging and dining areas, and can accommodate a maximum of 40 guests plus crew.
Aqua Expeditions have developed a range of responsible ecotourism practices with standards set well above the local environmental protection requirements including:
Fuel efficient ship engines which are quiet and virtually smoke free. Using a specialised wet exhaust system to minimise the emission of carbon dioxide and reduce our carbon footprint. To minimise noise and vibration on board, our marine generators have been encapsulated.
Engine emissions are minimised using the latest ecologically sound outboard engines.
An efficient Ecolab cleaning and sanitation program lowers consumption of water and energy, and reduces the chemicals and waste released into the environment.
Waste is treated onboard in fully contained storage tanks that result is 100 percent clean, sterile water that can safely be discharged into the rivers. Remaining waste materials unsuitable for this process is collected during the journey for delivery at disembarkation for recycling or responsible disposal.
According to Aqua Expeditions, the company is committed to identifying and helping to meet the needs of the people of Cambodia and Vietnam along the Mekong River. This includes environmental conservation and protection of natural resources surrounding these communities, and supporting education as well as environmentally friendly ways for these people to earn their living.
The company also has a number of social outreach efforts including ‘Pack for a Purpose’, a global initiative that allows travelers to make a lasting impact in the community at your travel destination. Asking travellers to save just a small extra space in their suitcase to bring supplies for area schools or medical clinics in need, travellers have the opportunity to make a priceless impact in the lives of local children and families.
